Acrylic and artificial flowers on canvas
36x36"/95x95cm
2017
This piece was made for the final senior exhibition my class was having at Miami Arts Charter School. Last two years of my high school experience have changed my life dramatically, since moving from Russia to the United States has been a tremendous shift that has reconstructed my world perception and identity. This shift has also allowed me to discover and accept myself in a new light, become a person I never thought I could be.
In the piece, I put myself in a wreath of roses and chamomiles – national flowers of the U.S. and Russia – to show the contrast between the flowers yet also the way my path united them into something whole. I intentionally put myself in the most vulnerable position to express my newly acquired confidence and readiness for the new chapter of my life.
